Mrs. Laurene Atkinson, age 88 of 7628 E. Langley Road, Elm City, NC., passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Wilson Medical Center.

A celebration of her life will be held 3:00pm Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Tabernacle Temple of Jesus Christ, 1601 Lane St. Ext. Reverend Mark M. Johnson will officiate with Reverend Roderick Tillery presiding. Interment will follow at Hamilton Burial Garden, Lane St. Ext.

Mrs. Atkinson was the daughter of the late Walter Farmer and Hazel Cooper Farmer, and was born February 22, 1925, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

She was married to the late Wiley Atkinson, and to this union eight children were born. Three preceded her in death, Wiley Clee Atkinson, Curtis Lee Atkinson and Walter Lee Atkinson. She was preceded in death by six sisters.

She received her formal education in the Wilson County Public Schools. She was employed with Vinson-Bynum School, Wilson, NC, and Elm City Elementary School, Elm City, NC, where she was the lead custodian. She retired after seventeen years of service.

Laurene was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a faithful member of Chery Chapel Church, Elm City, NC, for over 60 years.

Precious memories are shared by her daughters: Marie Atkinson Wells (Tommie) of Elm City, NC, Lillie Atkinson of Elm City, NC, Bernice Atkinson McLaurin (Earlie) of Rocky Mount, NC, and Pauline Fullwood, whom she reared, of Greensboro, NC. Two sons: Leslie Atkinson (Vann) of Elm City, NC and Thurman Atkinson (Linda) of Wilson, NC; one daughter-in-law: Claudia Atkinson of Fayetteville, NC; nineteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, other realtives and friends.

A public viewing will take place Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 1-8pm and with the family present from 6:45-7:45pm at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 726 Tarboro St. SW., Wilson.
